Things to Consider When Buying the Best Double Jogger

To get the jogging stroller that is best for you and yours, there are quite a few things to take into consideration. Do you need fixed wheels or swivel wheels? Think about what type of tire, inflatable or not. How it folds. How much suspension you need. You need to know what age is safest for you to begin jogging with your baby. What sort of seat is best for you children. What handlebar will suit you best? Will you need child Seat compatibility? And is a handbrake or wrist strap safer?

Jogging with a Baby

For maximum safety, your baby should be at least six to eight months of age. Waiting until a baby has gained strength in their neck will help avoid shaking baby’s brain. Even if a baby is a snug in their car seat, they still may be jostled as you jog over bumps.

Always ask your pediatrician if your baby is ready for a jogging stroller. Don’t let that keep you from buying one. You can be prepared for the day when your baby is old enough to take that run with you and their older sibling.

Additionally, for your children’s safety, no matter what age, always make sure they are buckled in tight. Most joggers come with excellent harnesses to keep your child in place while you are running swiftly. They are great safety features, but they won’t work if you don’t use them.

Fixed or Swiveled

There are two types of jogging strollers you can buy. The first is a jogger with fixed wheels that offer no turning. Fixed wheels are non-wobbly, so they are perfect for stability and running. However, they are only for running.

If you want a more multi-use jogging stroller, then you should buy the second type, the swivel wheel jogger. Most swivel wheeled joggers can be locked into place, still making them great for running. They have more maneuverability thus making them great for going shopping as well. If you are planning on having two strollers, one for every day use and one for running, you should get a fixed wheeled jogger for your running.

The Fold

Depending on whether you want to travel with your jogger will help you decide if the fold of it matters. If you have a minivan or pickup truck with plenty of extra space, then you won’t need to focus on getting a jogger that folds up with the highest compact ability possible. However, if you have a tiny Toyota hatchback, you will want a jogger that folds up as small as it can.

Make sure to measure the place where you will be stowing your double jogger, to make sure you buy one that will fit. Also, consider the width of the door in your home and where inside your plan to store it. Remember those double jogging strollers, even when collapsed can be bulky.

Suspension

As parents of a six-month-old, you will want a jogger with excellent wheel suspension to best save your baby from a jostling ride. If you would like to get in your exercise while putting your baby to sleep, you will want the smoothest ride available. However, if your two children are older, a little bouncing won’t bother them as much.

Car Seat Compatability

There are a few joggers that are compatible with an infant seat. Parents of young babies must think about whether they want to jog with their six-month-old sitting in a stroller seat or a car seat. Again, remember that it is not considered safe to run with babies of a certain age, so you may not even need a car seat compatible stroller.

But, if for some reason you decide you do need to use a jogging stroller with your newborn in their car seat, make sure you buy one that a car seat can attach. Never put a newborn in a car seat on a stroller that isn’t made to hold a car seat.

Adjustable Handlebar

The handlebar and whether it adjusts or not is probably not your biggest concern when buying a stroller. When it comes to the handlebar most of the time, you only want to make sure that it is high enough to allow you to stand up straight. Having to slouch while walking or running is a significant inconvenience. However, you may want to take the handlebars adjustability into consideration if you will be sharing your jogger with someone else who is a different height.

The Seat

The seat is important to consider to make your children comfortable. If you hope to run until your babies fall asleep, then you will want a place that reclines nicely to aid in your baby’s slumber. You will want a deep seat so that baby is snug and protected and able to enjoy the ride more.

Wrist Strap or Handbrake

For additional safety, you will want either a handbrake or wrist strap. A hand brake gives you a lot more control than a harness, but they are a little more expensive. A handbrake is best if you are running up and down a lot of hills. With a handbrake, you can better control the speed by pumping the brake as you go downhill.

A wrist strap is an excellent way to ensure safety because it assures that your stroller will never run away without you. So, if you can afford it, buy a double jogger that has both for extra safety.

Tires

Many double jogging strollers come with inflatable wheels like bike tires. The only thing you need to take in consideration when buying a double jogger with bike tires is that you will need to check the air pressure routinely. You will also need to buy an air pump to refill the tires when needed.

Additional Best Double Joggers for Your Consideration

Thule Urban Glide 2 Double Stroller

The Swedish company Thule (Too-lee) has updated their previous double jogger, and it is very worthy. Thule has created an elegant, lightweight, European styled double jogging stroller with fantastic features. It is sleek and less bulky than most jogging strollers. The Urban Glide 2 is car seat compatible.

The seats are easy to use. They are generously padded and still comfortable though not very tall. The seat height is adequate for your growing children. Each Seat has a five-point safety harness, which your child can’t unfasten. Both seats come with full coverage, adjustable canopy made from UPF50+ materials. The canopies have side ventilation and a peek-a-boo window.

Additionally, the Urban Glide 2 had ample storage with a zip-top water-resistant cover, unlike any other jogging stroller. It also has ergonomic, adjustable handlebars. Thule has equipped this jogger with 16″ inflatable rear tires and four-wheel suspension to assure a smooth ride. The front tire swivels and can be locked with ease and has a “fine-tune” feature to get it perfectly straight for maximum stability.

The features don’t stop there. This jogger has reflective stripes on all the tires, for the times you might be out as it grows dark. It has a smooth twist handbrake for running down hills. It is easy to unfold and fold. When folded up it is self-standing. It folds up snug, and the wheels come off so it can fit in compact car trunks.

Lastly, this jogger seems almost perfect. And it would very nearly be perfect, except for its shorter seats. Also, despite its adjustable handlebar, some users have complained that it is still tricky to get the height just right. They don’t care for the high price tag. However, many users said the jogging stroller is the best and therefore worth the price.

Pros

  • Adjustable handlebar
  • Easy Twist Handbrake
  • Easy to fold/compact/ self-standing
  • Swivel wheel w/lock
  • Storage with zip top water-resistant cover

Cons

  • Handlebar height limitation
  • Short seats
  • pricey

Baby Jogger Summit X3 Double

This stroller is Baby Jogger’s actual jogging stroller, made both as a double and a single. The Summit X3 double, unlike the City Select, consists of two non-removable side by side seats. The side by seats makes this stroller wider than the City Select. However, the Summit X3 can be used on more mixed terrain when jogging, while the City Select can only be used when running on smooth roads.

Keep in mind, because this is a side by side seat stroller it is wide. So of course, you will want to measure your door to make sure it fits through. Though wide, this stroller does fit, even if barely, through your standard 36″ doorframe.

One of the biggest reasons the Summit can be used on rougher terrain is due to its 16″ all-terrain inflatable rear tires, and it’s 12″ all-terrain inflatable front tire. The front wheel also has a switch that makes switching from swivel wheel to fixed wheel extremely easy. No more having to crouch down.

The seat of the Summit has a support bar underneath to keep them from sagging. There is an easy to use mechanism to achieve your desired recline. They recline independently and can lay nearly flat. The seats come with a five-point safety harness and are made with removable, machine washable, fabric.

Additionally, the seats come with well built, easy to use canopies. The canopies are tall and roomy giving your children lots of headroom to grow. The canopies have top ventilation, peek-a-boo windows and UV 50 protection from the sun.

The Summit X3 Double Jogger Has More

The Summit is also made with the same easy fold side handles as the City Select. The summit folds up compact enough to fit in a medium size trunk.

The handlebar is not adjustable, so keep this in mind if you are above or below average height. To make up for the unmovable handlebar, Baby Jogger did equip this jogger with a runaway strap. So, if you are so unlucky as to trip and fall during your run, your stroller, and your kids, won’t run off without you. It also has a handlebar and foot brake.

Furthermore, the Summit is a bit back-heavy, but will not fall back unless you fully recline both seats. Also, because Baby Jogger discourages against running with an infant, it is not car seat compatible. However, if you insist on running or using this jogger with an infant, they do make a compact pram option.

Lastly, the Summit comes with ample storage, but the under-basket is split in two by a bar so that you can’t stow large items. Just like the City Select, you will need to purchase the cupholder caddy for additional storage. Along with not liking to have to buy all the separate parts, reviewers complained that they had some trouble with the tires staying inflated. Hopefully, they contacted Baby Jogger about their tires. Overall, most reviews preferred the Summit X3 double over the Bob Duallies and the Flex.

Pros

  • Easy Fold
  • 5 Point harness
  • Swivel wheel lock with switch
  • Hand and Foot Brake
  • Runaway Strap
  • All Terrain Tires

Con

  • Split storage
  • Wide
  • Back Heavy
  • Not car seat compatible

Bumbleride Indie Twin Stroller

The Bumbleride Indie Twin Stroller is another multi-use double jogger. While not running it can be used as a regular double stroller. The Indie is also the most environmentally friendly double jogger currently on the market

Bumbleride’s strollers are environmentally friendly due to the way they are making their strollers and with what material they are using. Bumbleride is constructing their strollers with eco-fabric one hundred percent recycled polyester (rPET), recycled water bottles. Each stroller has utilized fifty-two water bottles. The strollers use fifty-five percent less C02 emissions during the construction process and eighty-nine percent less water during the dying process. Each stroller is Oeko Tex Standard 100 Class 1 Certified free of harmful chemicals.

Not only is the Indie environmentally friendly and toxin free, but it also equipped with super canopies with extra extensive coverage. Seriously, the coverage is very wide, and on the 2018 model, they added one and a half inches of more headroom. The canopies have SPF 45+ sun protection, a viewing window, and removable back panel.

Tires, Seat and more

The very wide canopies cover comfortable, soft, deep, seats, which have built-in cupholders for your child’s water bottle. You will have to buy the additional caddy for adult cupholders. Most importantly, the seats have a five-point breakaway harness for extra security for your children. The seats recline fully to a layback position with the pull of a single lever. They also have airflow vented backrests. The footrests are adjustable to make the seat compatible with an infant without having to use an infant car seat. However, the Indie is compatible with double car seats as well.

Additionally, the Indie is equipped with four twelve inches all terrain tires, with all-wheel suspicion creating a smooth ride. The two front wheels swivel three hundred and sixty degrees and have an inline lock option. The Indie comes with an air pump to keep your tires inflated. There is a designated place to stow the air pump in the large cargo basket underneath. The large cargo basket is not bisected by a bar, like the Summit X3, thus giving ample space.

Furthermore, the Indie is made with an adjustable, PVC free handlebar with a wrist strap attached. Though there is no handbrake, the Indie does have a foot brake. It also has a one-step compact fold with auto lock. It also has stand and stow capability, like the Thule.

Lastly, Bumbleride claims the Indie is designed to be narrow. At thirty inches wide, it certainly should fit through the standard thirty-six-inch doorway. However, some reviewers claim they had trouble fitting it through most doors. Along with the price this seemed to be the only complaint. Most reviewers were impressed with the overall quality of the Indie, the softness of the material and the smoothness of the ride.

Pros

  • Stand and stow
  • Eco-friendly built
  • No harmful chemicals
  • Wide canopies
  • Wrist strap
  • Five-point harness
  • Adjustable handlebar

Cons

  • No handbrake
  • Pricey

In Conclusion

And there you have it; those are my top five picks for the best double jogging stroller reviews for 2018 with the addition of the Thule from 2018 and two others. The Baby Jogger City Select emerges as the outright winner if you want a multi-use double stroller you can run with on smooth roads. The City select has more storage space, a bigger canopy and adapter brackets which you don’t find in the other joggers.

However, if you are looking for a double stroller to only use for running, then the Thule has to be your choice. The fact that it can stand alone when folded has me sold. That and the waterproof zipper close under storage compartment.
